Using colors to visually increase a small apartment is one of the oldest tricks in the playbook. But colors require extreme attention to details and careful planning. As much as colors can help your small apartment look more spacious and more beautiful, they can also ruin the atmosphere, crowd your space and make your apartment look repulsive. Therefore, it is important to pay extra care and attention. Let’s take a look at some of the tricks you can employ.

Go for sharp colors

The first and best way to expand your apartment using colors is to choose very clear and sharp colors. Go for sharper tones, and try to avoid dull tones as much as possible. For example, some of the options that are available are electric blue, yellow, and green. Make sure to leave enough air between the different color pieces. Between the color combinations always leave room for negative space. This trick enhances the clarity and openness of the space and makes it look more spacious. Do not be afraid to go for sharp colors. It is a tendency for most people to go for neutral and pale colors, but sharp colors are also very good for small apartment.

Focal Wall

The idea is to choose one wall and paint it in a different color than all the other walls in the room. You can also go for a deeper shade of the existing color in the room. For example, if your room is light blue, paint one wall in cobalt blue or royal blue. This trick work wonders in a small apartment. Don’t be afraid to go bold with colors. While many designers might frown on the idea, a darker color wall can make the space look much larger than it actually is.

Connect the space with different colors

When you use different colors into the apartment, you actually divide the apartment into different corners and rooms. So why shouldn’t you try the opposite? As in, paint your apartment in one color, but different shades and tones. Different shades of the color unite all the room, making the apartment look bigger. Choose a pattern that can be repeated. Some examples, a pillow that matches the fabric of the lampshade, or a style on the mirror that echoes the side table. All these tricks help create cohesive space that look bigger and more spacious. No matter which color you choose, there are always brighter and darker shades of it.

Splash of color

In most cases, small apartment lack color as designers opt for light, neutral color tones. Adding a splash of some color is a great way to bring life, playfulness and excitement into the space. And it doesn’t have to be something extreme. For example, you can add splashes of color to the radiator, or to the inside of the bookshelf, or to the inside of the windowsill. There are countless of options and ideas. It is up to you to choose the color you will use for splashes, but don’t be afraid to go bold here. For example, red and orange are very good options.
