HDB 4-Room With White Walls And Light Teak Wood

In this modern styled apartment, we see how wood as a material can be used as a contrast. Starting from the living room with tiles flooring, the room is rich with multiple wooden elements.

But the most significant s the TV feature wall, done with wood and glass. The color of the wood and the texture serves as a perfect contrast to the smooth tiles floor.

Wood is not the only way the designer brings texture into the environment. Wallpapers also play a huge role in adding texture and visual elements to the interior. We see this in the room with the shoe cabinet, and in the bedroom as well.

In the bedroom, the wallpaper is synced with the room in a special way. The wall behind the bed is made out of wood, and the wallpaper going out of the wood looks like wooden trees.

As mentioned previously, wood is the approach the designer takes for adding contrast. But wood can also compliment the other parts of the room. This trick is used in the kitchen.

The gray tiles flooring is complement by the gray wooden finish of the kitchen elements. And to top it all, the marble kitchen top provides a breath of life in the gray environment.

Modern Urban At DLeedon Condo Farrer Road

When you enter the apartment, you notice it looks like an urban jungle. How so? While the basic concept is modern style, the way it was executed is a lot different with urban elements added to make the environment entertaining, interesting and playful.

The first major difference between common modern spaces and this one is the approach. Modern design usually opts for minimalistic style, but here, we see more elements.

The second is colours. While modern is associated with white, bright and cream colours, here we have rich, deep and luxurious tones.

An interesting element in the hallway is the feature wall. The designer has made an imitation to a TV feature wall, placed it in the entry room, and added illumination.

This element ensures that right from the moment you step foot into the apartment, you are sure you can expect everything in it.

Another interesting choice is the TV feature wall in the living area. Opting for marble as a material, the designer adds a luxurious, unique touch and depth to the room.

In the bedroom, the designer takes the approach of playing with texture. A marble like headboard is accompanied by laminate flooring, soft, linen bedding, and a crude rug on the floor.

The room is rich with textures, but they are all blended together thanks to the similarities in design and colour.

HDB Sleek and Simple with Neutral Colors

By using neutral colors, the designer has made this apartment neat and warm in the same time.

What makes this apartment compact and cozy is the removal of walls. While the designer has removed some of the walls, such as the one between the living area and the small bedroom, the privacy is still there.

The designer has achieved that by installing sliding doors, an element from Japanese style that has been adjusted to fit the modern style.

In the kitchen, we see an influence from western culture, as the dining table is more of a bar stool than a table. The designer achieves a great contrast in the kitchen in an unusual way.

While the elements are white, the appliances are black. The classic black and white combination always looks good, but it is nice to see thinking outside of the box from time to time.

On the road to the master bedroom, you are greeted with several mirrors and other glass elements. Once you enter the bedroom, you notice another significant change from the traditional bedrooms.

The floor is done in tiles. While tiles have entered interior design and are more frequently used nowadays in the living room, the bedroom was still a room without experiments. But we see tiles can work in a bedroom setting as well.

Tips To Create Space In A Small Home - Interview By Daphne Lim MediaCorp 938LIVE

Our partners, Ivan Lin, Director of Aart Boxx Interior and Glenn Tan, Director of Design Chapterz were interviewed by Daphne Lim, producer of MediaCorp 938LIVE. If you have missed the radio interview, you can read some highlights of the transcript here to get tips on creating space in your smal home.

---- Transcript Start --------------------

Daphne: Is it a common request that you guys hear ... can you make my home look bigger?... Is that from HDB, condo or landed properties home owners?

Glenn: Basically all the new houses now are strictly down in terms of size.. so I think space factor is very important. Especially storage for big families and their kids...

Daphne: I'm just wondering because you guys always get the same request "Can I make my space bigger?", "Can you unclutter my room?", "Can I bring down my walls so that everything looks bigger?"... that sort of thing.... Do you have a set template for certain layout of the house because there are only a few different types of HDB layout which you are quite familiar already. Are there some standard suggestions you have on hand?

Glenn: For most HDB home owners who want to have a more spacious home, they have the option to break down one wall for one bedroom to combine with the living, so that they can have a bigger living space because most of the time, they will spend their time in the living area with their family.

Daphne: Is that the suggestion you always give to your clients?

Glenn: Not really, because firstly we should understand their requirements first, so I will say every customer are customized to their required needs.

Daphne: How do you start understanding their requirements?

Glenn: Ok, usually I will ask them to arrange for an appointment to go down to their actual house so that you can take the exact measurements and have a better feel of the whole place because a there's a lot of things we don't see in the floor plan, especially the feel of it..... where should we put our sofa, where should the TV area be.... stuff like that. And then after all the measurements are taken, photos taken, we will come back and gather all the information and requirements and will go down to a more devise plan.

Daphne: And you sit them down in the space itself? Because sometimes they don't have much access if they don't actually own the home yet... Do you sit them down with the blueprint or do you go to the space?

Glenn: .. Usually, it will be the blueprint.

Daphne: ... They can kind of get a good idea from there and make decision from there?

Glenn: .. Of course, that will help when we show them our previous similar projects in terms of the layout, the 3D drawings so that they can visualize better.

Daphne: Ivan, how about you? How did you get to know what your client's requirements are?

Ivan: Of course, for the first round same like Glenn, we have to meet up.. so meet up to discuss ... what is your needs and requirements, then for us to propose more ideas for you. At the same time, if we have done up projects, we will actually bring the customer up with the permission of the home owners, .. to actually feel the space...

Daphne: Right...

Ivan: So for example.... customers with 5-room layout, if we bring them to another 5-room layout, they can feel the space better.

Daphne: Yah... ok.... So some of your customers are on such good relations with you... they will like actually let your potential customers to come and see what you have done...

Ivan: Yah... actually quite a few....

Daphne: Ok, that's really useful... I think... because when you look at the blueprint, you really just can't see it. You don't know how high the ceilings are, you don't know where the windows are actually going to fit, how the lights going to come in..... I mean what are some of the biggest concern when you are going to a home owner space they usually have?

Glenn: I think... firstly they really can't visualize the space. They did not know... how big the sofa they can have, whether can a king size fit my bedroom... So usually I will do a very careful planning on the layout, and this layout is based on the actual site measurements. So I can advise them what is the maximum size of the furniture they can get. So that it's easier to comb down the size than rather to size up.

Daphne: What are the chances that there's going to be a discrepancies between the actual space vs the blueprint?

Glenn: Usually, it's about 5-10% smaller

Daphne: oh.... you are serious?

Glenn: Yes, it is..

Daphne: oh.... goodness, so I could have bought a bed and could not bring through the door frame...

Glenn: Exactly.

Daphne: Ok, so does that happen to you as well, Ivan?

Ivan: Actually dimension wise, it is really not 100%. From the floor plan, 2D layout, we can see where are the additional things... so all these even when you plan beforehand, after we get the keys, we take a look at the place.... might have some minor changes here and there.

Daphne: So you would recommend that not buying anything, not actually putting hand to paper anything unless you have step into the space first.

Ivan: .. Better to be like this....

Daphne: Ok, so that's the tips we can all take..... Now scandinavian design like you mention just now.... contemporary design that is popular... obviously we are thinking of our pockets... and that you mention eariler on that..... Ivan is there a more economical way to approach in designing your house?

Ivan: I would say so.... because maybe in the past modern concept is more in place.....

Daphne: .... So take us to what's the difference between modern concept vs contemporary concept

Ivan: So for Modern concept wise of course... one difference will be the whole feel of the whole space... for modern... more gloss, black, white, you know grey.... this kind of colour... So for scandinavian, it's more like woody kind of feel. So the overall feel for modern wise.... a lot of people will like to have more storage in everywhere, so can store more things.

Daphne: But storage is completely different from design... storage can be created within any kind of design... Can I say that?

Ivan: Yes... but for scandinavian concept, probably some things they buy offshelves, more european kind of concept and not so much of built-ins. So for offshelves, you can remove it anytime, so it's not cluttered... it doesn't look like everything is full height / built-in.

Daphne: Are there any downside to scandinavian designs especially you are working with so much wood?

Glenn: Of course, maintenance is a issue. For example if you are using a real teak wood, you got to really take care of the wood. To avoid from moisture, especially water contact...

Daphne: So that means cleaning it every.....

Glenn: You got to maintain it regularly with furniture polish

Daphne: Goodness, that sounds like a lot of work... is it ok not to use real teak but just to create the effect?

Glenn: I think if you are a wood lover, teak will be the best option.

Daphne: That sounds like that's got some work ahead of me if I'm looking for scandinavian design for house

HDB Renovation For $14.7k At Sengkang East Ave

image
This HDB flat is renovated at a budget cost of $14.7k including the kitchen & shoe cabinet, study room glass panel & sliding door. What is the most significant piece in the apartment is the glass panel with sliding doors in the living area.

The glass panel serves as the de facto study room in this case, but it can also be used for other type of rooms, such as reading corner.

The apartment is designed in modern style, which is best visible by the use of materials for the floor and some of the finishing. Tiles dominate the environment, as they are slowly replacing parquet in the interior design.

We see several marble and granite finishing, especially in the kitchen on the dining room. For the kitchen counter top, however, the designer sticks to wood as one of the best materials. The only downside of wood is maintenance.

The whole apartment looks spacious, even though several rooms have been combined into one large sum. There are no walls, and the free space allows for better flow of air between the rooms.

In the kitchen, we see how well tiles work with high gloss material on the kitchen elements. While there might be challenges for maintenance, MDF high gloss material is arguably the best looking material.

HDB Minimalistic Luxury

People often think that to achieve a luxurious look of the apartment, you need to crowd it and overwhelm it with glitzy and shiny accessories. In reality, even minimalistic style can look luxurious and stylish.

The trick here is the TV feature wall. Done in what can be described as Victorian style with the lamps on it, the design is as unique as possible. The lights emphasize a cream, luxurious colour that looks richer and deeper.

Another element that adds to the luxurious feeling of the apartment is the faux wall. Its purpose is to separate the living area from the dining area, but black is always considered classic, elegant and luxurious colour.

The mat finishing of the faux wall makes the black look shiny and special. We mentioned that the style is minimalistic, and you can notice it by the lack of furniture elements. An interesting aspect is how all the three rooms (kitchen, dining and living are connected.

While the living area is separated from the dining with a faux wall, the dining and the kitchen area are separated with a glass sliding door. The whole concept creates flow of energy between all rooms.

HDB 5-Room Scandinavian At Blk 487C Choa Chu Kang

The Scandinavian style is a huge trend in the interior design in the last years. But as with every style, the Scandinavian evolves towards perfection more and more. For example, few years ago, using wooden materials in the interior was enough to achieve the style.

Nowadays, the designers strive more and more, the finishing of the wooden furniture, as well as flooring and doors to look as authentic as possible and close to the natural look of wood and plants in the wild.

The designer tries to add as much wood to the interior as possible, but in the same time, keep it minimal and do not choke and overwhelm the environment.

A perfect example is the door that separates the hallway from the kitchen. The door is glass made and transparent to make the environment look spacious, but the designer has added wooden frames to look more stylish.

Another great example of evolution and adjustment is the bedroom. The designer shows how Scandinavian style can use some tricks from different styles, and the sliding doors between the bedroom and the office room are great example.

Modern Woody With Lots of Textures At The Trevista

Whenever you think of a modern design, there are three key approaches.

The first one is black and white minimalistic, the second is combination with contemporary and Scandinavian, and the third common approach is modern interior with textures to make it look interesting.

In this case, the designer uses the third approach, adding a lot of texture to almost every room. In the living room, the choice for texture almost always is the TV feature wall. But the designer goes a step further, and adds a mirror wall opposite it, further enhancing the texture.

The kitchen is done in an interesting manner. While open concept kitchens are common in modern design nowadays, in this case, you have a feeling that the designer has just “dropped” the kitchen and the kitchen island in the middle of everything. But it fits perfectly in the interior.

The signature element of the design, aside from texture are the beds. In every room, and for every bed, the designer opts for a platform bed. What the platform does is add extra storage, but also creates a certain room within the room feeling.

HDB Completed Modern Industrial At Blk 549A Segar Road

The main goal of the interior design was to add as much brightness as possible. Since there is little natural light, the design must take full advantage of it.

What the designer has done is opt for bright cement tiles in most rooms, while keeping the interior in white and creamy colours. Thanks to the customised lights, the environment is bright, despite the low sources.

In the kitchen, there is no window, so the designer had to improvise. To get light from other rooms, the designer has hacked the wall and installed a glass panel and door. This way, the kitchen receives light, but it is still closed to block scents and oil grease.

The whole apartment is done in minimalistic style, but in the bedroom, the approach is most visible. The designer installs a walk in wardrobe, but everything else is removed from the room.

There are no nightstands or similar unnecessary furniture elements. The laminate flooring creates a sense of coziness, warmth and comfort.

In what is essentially a Scandinavian industrial design, the designer pulls few tricks up from his sleeve to make the environment look visually appealing, and add extra rooms.

The living area represents the Scandinavian industrial style the best, as the room is decorated in a minimalistic style, with lots of nature and texture. The room is bright thanks to the reflective tiles. The ceiling lamps take care for the industrial touch.

As we mentioned, the designer uses some tricks to add custom rooms to the apartment. The trick he uses is glass panels to separate the rooms. With glass panels, the designer has added a custom study room next to the living room, but also a wardrobe in the bedroom.

The glass panel has metallic gray frames, which are purposely used to add contrast and style to the environment.

In the kitchen, it is all about finishing and outlook of the elements. Notice how all the kitchen elements look very closely to natural wood. It is one of the latest trends for a more natural look and feel of the environment.

Creative Woody Bedroom

Wood can be used for different styles and goals. And it doesn’t always have to be natural wood. Laminates are also a good option. In this bedroom, we see different types of woods for different goals.

The first thing that the designer does is to raise the headboard to the ceiling to add a partition in the room. The room gets an extra wall, which thanks to the wood finishing looks stylish, but is functional in the same time.

Since the room needs to be comfortable and cozy, and the designer doesn’t have a lot of room to operate, he has raised the level of the bed for a few more inches to get deeper drawers for even more storage.

When you look at the room as a sum, you notice it is actually split in four different areas. The bed and the sleeping area, the working area, a seating area next to the windows and a hallway area with a huge full body mirror.

All of these corners are possible thanks to wooden partitions and walls.

HDB Elegant Interior By Mixing With Wood And Mirror

Mixing and matching is one of the best approaches a designer can take to make an environment visually appealing, interesting and inviting. In most cases, when you think of mix and match, you think of different texture, materials and motives.

But in this case, the designer shows how one material can be used in different solutions, and how to mix them.

Starting from the living room, the designer mixes lighter and darker shades of natural wood. And to top it, the tiles on the floor are bright, reflective, and very easily blend into the environment of the area.

Every piece in the room has been carefully designed and placed to fit with the natural, wooden outlook and colour palette.

The master bedroom is designed in minimalistic style, and most of the elements are hidden. That goes for the wardrobe as well. But what makes the room elegant and classy is the mirror next to the bed and between the wardrobe.

The study room is an example of mixing natural and artificial materials. Natural wood has been used for the shelves, but the floor execution is done with laminate, an artificial form of wood.

Modern Version of Minimalistic Clean Look

When you think of minimalistic look, you think of black and white combination. But the modern minimalistic design style can also be achieved with white, cream and wooden like colors. The trick is to strive for clean and uncluttered look, which many mistake for minimalistic.

In essence, the styles are very close, as they both try to eliminate the unnecessary elements. Clean and uncluttered look strives for clean lines for the furniture, finishing, texture and everything else.

There are little to no accessories. In order for the environment to look interesting, texture is the alternative to accessories.

All of the textures and finishing used in the apartment are not monochromatic. They feature subtle motives. Take the wooden wall in the living area, or the texture for the sofa.

Another element that is essential in clean and uncluttered look is the dimensions of the environment. Adding an extra dimension with sky like ceiling is an excellent way to emphasize the room, and we see the trick in the small bedroom.

10 Functional Feature Wall Ideas You Can't Find In Singapore!

$

Feature walls are a great way to add colour and interest to a room. Rather than using a feature wall as a mere design element, why not take it up a notch to incorporate some functionality into the wall? Here are some ideas.

1. Photo wall
image
Source: www.home-dzine.co.za

Display your most cherished family moments by hanging framed photos of various sizes on a wall. This is a sure way to create a focal point in a room while adding tonnes of personality and visual interest at the same time.

2. Writing surface
image
Source: www.homedit.com

Blackboard walls are a great way of utilising wall space and transforming them into canvases to express your creativity. You can also use them to write messages, notes and grocery lists. This is something the little ones will love as it allows them to doodle on the walls without the repercussions!

3. Calendar
image
Source: www.housetohome.co.uk

Instead of just a plain blackboard wall, why not go a step further and create a wall calendar using chalkboard paint? This is especially great for a wall in a home office or kitchen as it allows you to keep track of family events and outings.

Simply paint the entire wall in chalkboard paint and create a calendar by drawing sections using chalk markers. With the passing of each month, simply wipe off and redraw.

4. TV console
image
Source: www.artemiskitchendesigns.com.au

Make use of the vertical space of a wall by installing a built-in TV console that doubles up as storage space. You can use interesting materials to add texture and uniqueness to the space.

5. Hidden storage
image
Source: www.homeanddecor.com.sg

Who doesn’t love additional storage? This is especially so in Singapore where most of us live in apartments. Ask your contractor to create a narrow storage space in front of a wall and add interesting texture such as wood panels, bricks, veneer or mirrors to the surface of the cabinet.

This is not only a great way to keep clutter at bay it also works well to hide unsightly household items and air-conditioning units. For the latter, use slatted wood panels to partially conceal the air-con unit while allowing cool air to flow into the room.

6. Mirrors
image
Source: www.theartofbespoke.com

You can add glamour and brightness into any room by inlaying an entire wall with mirrors. It is also a great way to give an illusion of more space. Plus, doubles up as a functional reflective surface!

7. Display shelf
image
Source: www.housetohome.co.uk

Feature walls that double as storage units need not be boring. Transform a basic shelf for your feature wall by adding attractive and colourful backsplashes. You can use either fabric or wrapping paper and glue them onto the backs and sides of each shelf.

8. Home gallery
image
Source: www.roomenvy.co.uk

If you love collecting art or other decorative objects, use a wall to display your collection in a gallery style. This will add personality and colour to any space. Plus you can appreciate your treasured pieces all at once!

9. Indoor garden
image
Source: www.houseandgarden.co.uk

If you are short on space for a full-fledged garden, why not transform one of your walls into an indoor vertical garden? Simply mount wooden boards or brackets onto the wall and place jars or pots of plants on top. This is especially great for small plants and herbs that don’t grow very tall.

10. World map wall
image
Source: www.iammommahearmeroar.net

If you are a frequent traveller, you can dedicate an entire wall in your living room to a world map and mark the countries that you have visited. You can purchase map decals or wallpapers from stores such as World Maps Online and apply the map on the wall as instructed.

This is a great way to add visual interest to a space and serve as inspiration for your next adventure!

Urban Spacious Living At Jalan Chermai

In an urban interior design, the goal is to use nontraditional materials and design features, and sometimes they include elements that are common for industrial interior.

We see all of those characteristics in the living area, with marble, tiles, granite and other materials used for the elements.

What is special about the living area is the unique TV feature wall. It is a certain type of a mosaic, with just three squares opened for decorations, while the other squares are tiles. It creates a sense of playfulness.

Another characteristic of the urban style is to include random and non functional objects, which in this case are the two plants next to the TV feature wall. The goal is to create outdoor, urban atmosphere.

The apartment features both wet and dry kitchen, one for where you do the cooking, while the dry one is for the dining table and quick lunch. In this case, however, true to the urban spirit, there is no dining table. Instead, the designer places a bar chairs on the kitchen island.
